Captain America #704

With this issue we sadly reach the end of Mark Waid's latest (but hopefully not his last) run on Captain America.

And it certainly does not go in the direction you might expect. Set in a future where civilization is barely hanging on and an alien threat hangs over the globe, one man - the descendant of Steve Rogers - hopes to find a way to restore freedom to the world.

In order to do it, he'll have to join forces with a most unexpected ally - and unravel a mystery that threatens the life of his son.

It's a powerful, moving and action-packed story - a great wrap-up to Waid's all-too-short run on this title, which has vaulted it from being one of the worst comics in Marvel's line, to being one of the best.

It sets up a real challenge for the next creative team. They have a lot to live up to!
