Avengers #1

Just in time for the new film, we have a new series dedicated to The Avengers - and a new first issue (though in the small print you can see that this is issue #691).

Happily, we're back to building from the original team's foundations here, along with adding some new blood - so the team (as it comes together in this issue) includes Captain America, Iron Man and Thor, along with the Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, the (She) Hulk and the modern version of the Ghost Rider.

There's a lot of firepower there so they're given a massively powerful enemy to counter - one that may be well beyond their abilities.

The issue is written by Jason Aaron, who's pulling out all the stops to make this a series about epic tales - and it's hard to imagine any reader failing to be pulled in by this setup.

The larger-than-life artwork is by Ed McGuinness and Mark Morales, and it's very impressive, moving effortlessly from the ancient past to the depths of space and all over the globe.

Aaron is using a story element he's worked to good use in other series - jumping back and forth between parallel stories set in different times - but the backstory set a million years in the past is a bit much to swallow, as it features a really unlikely team of Avengers.

But so far, it's all in good fun, and the issue ends on a heck of a cliffhanger - so I'm in!

You should be, too - it's a great jumping-on point!
