Here the event of the year slows down to a crawl, as the teams stop to evaluate the situation.
The X-Men have apparently surrendered to The Avengers - or have they? Both teams are desperate to find Hope, who seems to be the target of the approaching Phoenix Force - but Hope is staying one step ahead of both groups.
There are some clever twists and a surprising battle between two allies (you may have trouble deciding who to root for in this one).
To say much more would be giving away too much - but the artwork by John Romita, Jr. and Scott Hanna is outstanding - some of their best in recent years.
After two issues loaded with action, this one feels a bit lethargic - though it certainly picks up toward the end.
But it all moves along briskly and continues to feel like a classic Marvel crossover comic - and it's certainly long overdue to bring the mutants and the rest of the Marvel heroes together for a big hoo-hah event.
I'm in for the long haul.
