Today's Comics Haul

Here's what I picked up today:

- Adventure Comics #517 - For the Atom backup more than the Legion, uh, down front.

- Doc Savage #5 - As my friend James said, I'm buying this for the Justice Inc. backup strip. Sadly.

- Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #1 - Had to give Guy Gardner my support.

- Incredible Hulk #611 - Father versus son!

- Invincible Iron Man #29 - To the Rescue!

- Morning Glories #1 - Looked interesting, with an "early X-Men" vibe. Maybe.

- Steve Rogers: Super-Soldier #2 (of 4) - I liked the first issue a lot.

- Superman #702 - In Detroit? Hey, I was just there a few weeks ago!

- Thanos Imperative #3 (of 6) - This is building nicely (or badly, depending on how you look at it).

- Ultimate Spider-Man #13 - Bad things are happening here.

Per your suggestion, I went to the funny book store today to pick up the last couple of Hellboy books. Since they aren't getting #1 back in until next week, I picked up "Baltimore" by Mignola (art by Christopher Golden) instead. Haven't read it yet, but I'll tell you what I think!

Evan, Good call! I was really tempted by that issue but didn't pick it up - I'm curious to hear what you think about it.

Verdict: It's pretty good (on the Chuck scale: B or B-). But I'm completely lost on the backstory of this Lord Baltimore character, so I should probably pick up their previous stuff.

Quick amendment, though: Christopher Golden didn't do the art, he co-wrote it. Dude at the comic store told me wrong! No, art's by Ben Stenbeck. But I recommend picking it up. Classic Mignola "fake sci-fi history".

Doc Savage is killing me. I so wanted it to be at least solid if not great. So far, it's just...bad. I hope they can catch fire soon, 'cause if not, this book will die quick.

Evan, as far as I know, that's the only comic to feature the Lord Baltimore character - although I could be wrong. Christopher Golden has written other things with Mignola though, including a Hellboy novel, I believe.

Jim, I'm with you all the way on Doc Savage - I had such high hopes, and so far, it's just been a big disappointment.

Chuck,

You need to pick up a copy of GI Joe Real American Hero. 156 was classic Hama. I felt like I was reading the original Marvel series.

Nate, thanks for the suggestion! I wasn't an avid fan of the original series, but I like Hama's work and I hear great things about the new series, which picks up where Marvel's left off. I'll have to give it a try!
